A few weeks ago, the Globe and Mail profiled Ariane Fortin prior to her matches at the 2014 Commonwealth Games. Fortin has been labelled an underdog and a fierce boxer from those inside the sport. She has long competed against, and been in the shadow, of the formidable Mary Spencer, an accomplished and talented boxer in her own right.
Fortin and Spencer were the subject of a documentary Last Woman Standing, which screened in Toronto at the 2013 Hoc Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival. I was impressed by the film, and the athleticism, skill, and determination of both Fortin and Spencer. After all these years of Spencer being the face of Canadian women’s boxing, I’m happy that Fortin is getting an opportunity to do the same. Trailer below (it gives me goosebumps!)
