FIFA Officially Allows Soccer Players To Wear Turbans, Hijabs

In 2013, the Quebec Soccer Federation banned turbans during soccer matches, and in 2011 FIFA disqualified the Iran’s Women’s National Soccer Team from an Olympic qualifying match against Jordan because the team refused to remove their hijabs and tracksuits.

After much protest from Sikh and Muslim communities, FIFA has clarified their position on hijabs and turbans as they relate to soccer matches, putting to rest an ongoing ban that has excluded individual players in Canada and abroad from competing. For further reading, see below.
